From afghans for Afghans knit-and crochet-along

Here are a couple I just finished for afghans for Afghans. They're made with some lovely bulky alpaca/wool yarn donated to the group for baby blankets. I made these from leftover skeins. They aren't washed and blocked yet, but it felt so good to get them done I thought I'd post them anyway.

So it wasn't until I commented on the previous post that Sarah was not alone on this blog it was just that I hadn't knitted a hat in a while...that I realized I was fibbing...I've knit two and never got around to posting is all...

Here's Andy's New Hat:
Yes, that would be sock yarn on size #2 needles...I tend to go small with skul caps...
I used Ken's version of a roll-brim "half-dome" (on Knitty I think...)

And then, there is Andy's New Snowboarding Hat:
He has actually used it every time he's gone snowboarding this season...so for $9.00, I'm happy it is useful...I used Vanna's Choice yarns from JoAnn when they were on super sale for less than $3.00 a ball. I did have to buy the US 11 bamboo needles I used (yarn was held double)...so I guess it's a little more than $9.00. It's my version of the Jayne (Cobb) Hat made so popular by "Firefly."

And that would be it...if I'm fibbing again it's only due to short-term-knitting memory loss...

Christmas Hats

Ok. Another 2 Hat Tricks Please? (I'll do it, Jane!)

This one was for my niece - it's Coronet from Knitty

Then the green bulky WOTA from Knitpicks was for my sister, and the gray Lion Thick & Quick for my son-in-law...

And another WOTA Bulky for my nephew-in-law. This one is colorway Fly Fishing and he loves to do that, so it was special. Not to mention he agreed it was somewhat camoflage and he hunts, too. A good choice all around. The last three were my variation on this Seaman's Cap pattern that is just wonderful to knit. I tend to use whatever I have on hand for yarn and adjust my needles accordingly. Sometimes I do as she says and change from smaller to larger needles after the ribbing, and sometimes I don't.

OH...and then there's this one
This is a variation on
Norma's pattern here. I cast on 40 and just knit, then decreased and tied it off. I needed something special at the last minute for the third grandson, who's 15 months old. This worked.

I have one more on the needles - another from Needle Beedle. I'll post a photo soon - maybe even tonight!

Hello everyone! It has been a long time since I've posted here, but lookee I made another hat trick! These are three Odessa hats. The top hat is made with Lana Grossa Toccata, the middle hat is made with RYC Cashsoft DK, and the bottom is made with RYC Cashcotton DK. I gave away the top two to friends and chose to keep the green hat for myself! :)

Four new hats

These are a few of the hat & scarf sets I've been making for the homeless veterans' shelter in Detroit. Back in August, on my blog, I mentioned the generous donation of the large cones of machine knitting yarn to our group. I've finished almost 30 sets in all but these four give a good example of the way that the yarns can combine to make very distinct sets. I'm working with three or four strands at a time and using a size 13 circular for the hat and a size P hook for the matching crocheted scarves.

Okay, so only one of these is a hat. I almost forgot the May 25 deadline for the next Afghans for Afghans shipment, so I whipped up these little things this weekend.

The hat is just a simple baby cap in 2/2 ribbing and stockinette, made from the Peace Fleece in Baghdad Blue and a bit of the hand-dyed yarn from my ISE3 pal. I just realized I forgot to put the pompom on top. Oops. It's already in the mail.

It's not much, but every little bit helps.

I'm newly addicted to knitting hats. I've knit 9 since November. I have 4 more in the works right now.

I've very excited to join another KAL. They are so addictive and I really enjoy seeing everyone's work.

I'm also knitting my first sweater, the Hourglass, and started a KAL for it. I've become too distracted by hats to finish it though... Oops.

This bunch was all donated to a preemie area of a children's hospital.
This is my son right after he was born, I knit this in the hospital and then had to frog back some and add extra stripes cause his head was so big :D

My Next Batch of Hats

I tend to think of hats in "batches" since every two months most of mine are donated to Caps for a Cure. So this is my latest batch.

The two purple hats on the left are made from Elann Esprit, a stretchy yarn that has lycra (copycat of Cascade Fixation.) The yarn does make great chemo caps.

My favorite hat this time around is the Stained Glass Hat, the fair isle hat on the right. It's made with Rowan Handknit Cotton for the background and Red Heart Soft Yarn for the color. It was a very fun knit. I made some major mistakes at the beginning, but look forward to making a better one later.

I suppose most hat knitting will stop for a while since warmer weather is approaching, I'll still be making a few hats every couple months and will check in when I get them done.

Covering my own (bald) head...

Recently had surgery on my head, which gave me an excuse to get it buzzed (which is the way I wore it a long time ago, but which DH hates). It feels like a furry little animal. Okay, so I know I'm not 20 and skinny anymore, but I might just keep it buzzed for awhile. I love the way it feels.

Except in -30 F temps. So, I knit myself some blue hair...

And another "normal" hat in Patons SWS Natural Blues, shown here keeping me warm yesterday at the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks.

These with the one extra from last time should give me another hat trick. Yippee!

Now must knit a couple of scarves, then back to the charity hats.

(Surgery went great... I'm fine and sassy as always.)

Hi there! I'm Kim and I am excited to be here. I was going to upload some pictures here but Blogger is experiencing troubles in that area so it will have to wait. You are, however, more than welcome to come on over to my blog and have a look around there.

I'm currently knitting a hat for Sam (my son) that he will wear to school on Friday. They will have a hat contest for their St. Pat's Day party. I am making a Bowl of Spaghetti Hat in a bright lime color. It is from DIYs show Knitty Gritty. The hat part is finished. All I have left to make now is the "spaghetti" part of the hat which is just i-cord for roughly 6 feet. Then Sam and I will decorate it with Shamrocks and gold coins. This hat knit up really quickly and will be fun to wear. I can imagine all the different options that you could do with this hat.

This hat will make the third hat that I have made so far this year, or forever, since I just started knitting hats. :)

Circus Hats

I did it! Finished these four hats for the Afghans for Afghans special project to provide 400 hats for the circus kids. Got them in the mail this afternoon.

Due date (to reach San Francisco) is February 28, so if you've got a day or so to whip out a quick hat, they're requesting wool or natural fiber hats in these four solid colors... Red, blue, yellow, green. They'll be hand-carried to the kids at the circus school.

These were done in Peace Fleece, and the green one was particularly fun to make. I would not normally knit anything yellow, so the basket stitch one was was a nice change, too.

Another tea cozy?

Finished this cute little beanie for Afghans for Afghans yesterday. I seem to be into this tea cozy phase at the moment.

I loved knitting this, because I used some Harrisville 2-ply wool from a 20+ year-old cone left over from when I used to weave. I always loved this color, Garnet. I know most knitters like using softer stuff, but I love the lanolin in this yarn, and besides, it turns soft and cuddly in the wash.

And now I'm ready to start the hats for the children's circus project (see my previous post).

Luckily, the Peace Fleece yarns arrived last week. Bright! And mostly not colors I would normally use, so it will be a nice change. Here they are: Baghdad Blue (the darker one), Galooboy Blue, Khruschev Corn yellow, Shaba Green, and Ukranian Red. (If you've never explored the Peace Fleece site, it's a real pleasure, especially reading the story behind some of the names.)

Peace Fleece worsted is yummy to me because it smells and feels so sheepy. And there's sometimes a bit of hay stuck in, easy to remove, but just enough to remind you where the stuff comes from. I like the traditional feel of it, and it's good, warm stuff heading to a cold place.

Stripey hat and new Afghans for Afghans project...

Actually finished this one several days ago. Isn't it cute? A little too Christmas-y for my taste, but hey, I was being virtuous and using up bits and pieces of holiday wool from my stash. This one will go to Afghans for Afghans in their spring delivery. It's the (slightly modified) Helix Striped Cap pattern from 2007 Knitting Pattern a Day calendar.

Next I plan to make (at least) four more children's hats for AfA's special hat project to support the Afghan Mobile Mini Circus for Children. These need to be knit in solid colors to match the circus logo: red, light blue, yellow and lime green. I didn't have the colors, so I've just ordered the yarn from Peace Fleece and can hardly wait to get it. For anybody interested in doing this, the hats are due February 28.

Meanwhile, I'm doing a bit more stash-busting for small hats and perhaps socks.

Making More HEADway, LOL

That's a terrible pun; I should apologize. I have finished one more crocheted beanie, for DES whose birthday is next week and another Fun Fur beanie to send to Boston Childrens Hospital. The son's beanie was made in Lion Brand Cashmere blend, which really has a lovely hand to it, and would be luscious as a baby blanket or a sweater for me; glad to make a hat as a way to sample it. The fun fur beanie used one strand fun fur in hot pink, one strand bright red eyelash recycled from a failed project as my UFO Resurrection project for January, and one strand hot pink Lion Brand Microspun... I will take photos in good light tomorrow and post them on my blog. That makes five hats since I joined! I guess I really do make a lot of hats, which is what Sallee said to me when she invited me to join the group.

It's sort of amazing to me how much knitting I get done when I'm limited to a couple hours a day on the computer. I've been staying with my Mother (she very conveniently lives two blocks away) since she entered Hospice care and only get back here once or twice a day to handle email and blog. Fortunately, she's been getting stronger and I may be able to spend more time at home, but I'm still planning on spending the nights there and fixing meals.

Two More Headcoverings!

Last week, I managed to make myself a Calorimetry from some leftover Berroco Ultra Alpaca (and sure was grateful to be wearing it on a cold Saturday spent outside), and to finish a fun fur beanie for Boston Childrens Hospital Challenge(for a teen on the cancer ward) that Mini is shepherding along. There are now over 400 knitters making hats for this charity project, with a deadline of the end of February, in case you hadn't heard. I have started work on a second, and photos will be coming...

Calorimetry is really more of a narrow headscarf than a headband, but does a good job blocking the wind, and will be useful through the rest of the cold season. The color is really a purple heather... unfortunately, winter light doesn't make for the best photos.

Two More, One Missing

Somehow, my camera ate the photo of the last set of three hats that I made this last week, so I only have two sets to show of the 9 hats and 7 scarves I turned in for charity this last Thursday.

If anyone is interested in the pattern for the "window-pane" hat, it can be found here. I like to make them with a solid color matched with one of the Caron Rainbow Dreams colorways (Tradewinds is my favorite), but the hats look nice with a regular variegated in the "windows" or even another solid color.

Actually, we both look a little crazed, no?

It's my version of the Bobble-Edged Hat. (I told you my bobbles come out more like blumples.)

In spite of the clear resemblance to a bathing cap or knitted toilet paper cozy* or retro lampshade, I really like this hat.

It was fun to knit, and I think I'll do it again, perhaps in the Patons SWS Geranium colorway (or whatever that pinky-green one is). I'll make it just a tad smaller for my little pea head (I'm thinking about fulling this one a bit). I might leave off the bobbles, although they're kinda growing on me. (No, not literally.)

Hats are a necessity in Alaska... It's currently -42 F at my house. But I hate wearing them because I have such thin, fine hair that I always end up with a horrid case of hat-head. This hat, tho, is structured just enough and fits loosely and lightly enough that it doesn't mash my hair down too much.

*The photo above shows the hat drying on a coffee can. It looks a little more normal flattened, but it's definitely a bit daffy on me.

I suppose it it good that my hat recipients like their hats so much that I don't have pictures of them... Or are the 2 totally unrelated?
At any rate, my SIL, brother, and supervisor all wear their hats nearly daily (a feat in this freakishly un-winter weather).
SIL and brother have my own designs - patterns to come someday. Supervisor has my 1st fake isle (magknits.com) hat. And then... I made a negative one. I had justenough! yarn to finish it and fell in love with it so I kept it :) Obviously we don't wear them at the same time, in fact I haven't even told her that I have it. As soon as my camera stops misbehaving, I'll post pictures.
I'd sworn off hats for a while as I HATE DPNs. Then I discovered magic loop and the fact that I can knit a hat in just a few hours and I'm back on the hat-wagon.
I may have mentioned before, but I'm in the process of writing a winter accessory book - any contributions would be fantastic and of course you'd get full recognition and rights to your pattern. So far, I have 3 hat patterns, 1 mitten pattern, 1 scarf pattern, and 1 felted bag pattern.

Finally! I joined this KAL just before it went on vacation. So I haven't been able to count any hats, even though I've been knitting a lot of them. I'm so glad the blog has been revived.

I made six hats in the last month and two the month before. All but the one on the top left were for Caps for a Cure. The top left is a hat I made up to match My So Called Scarf. I made it for myself because I love the yarn, but may give it away if the right person comes along. :)

I love seeing all the great hats posted to this KAL. The variety is wonderful.

The only hats I tend to knit are for "Caps for a Cure" so imagine my surprise when my 18 year old son and two of his friends wanted beanies. There isn't much call for that in Southern California but it's been pretty cold lately (for us). Hubby wanted a brown one so that one's on the needles now. After that, back to the Chemo hats. :-)

A Swirlie!

My ice cream swirl cap in leftover yarns from Peace Fleece and Elann Pervuvian Highland wool.

This hat is really cute, and the pattern is from Caps for Kids, but I doubt that I will ever make another, simply because it is a parallelogram with color changes that either result in lots of twisting to carry the colors up the side or lots of ends... in my case, I used the side with the ends for the top, and incorporated them into the pompom.

In case your family and friends are sick of you trying to pawn hats off on them, or simply because you want to help out, go on over to Mini's and check out her charity project making fun fur hats for young people ages 10-16 at the Boston Children's Hospital chemo unit. These kids are taking losing their hair well by donning fuzzy, fake-hair hats. I dove through my stash and came up with some unused Fun Fur in pale orange and hot pink, and also picked up some bright red Fizz on sale at my LYS to help with this great project.

He's worse than a young'un. I've begged, pleaded, cajoled and chased DH with the camera to try to get a decent photo of the Patons SWS hat and scarf. Finally cornered him, and this is my reward: a blurry, less-than-happy-looking shot. He swears he's delighted with the knitting; he just hates standing still for a pic.

The colors aren't true in the photo. This is the Earthtones colorway, and it really has more greens and browns in it, although the greys and pinkish beige tones are definitely there. I enjoyed knitting with the SWS and highly recommend it for softness, but only if you don't mind fuzziness. I'm thinking felted something-or-other for my next foray with this yarn.

In the meantime, I've decided to knit the Bobble-Edged Hat for myself using the beautiful jewel-toned wool yarn dyed by my ISE3 pal to match the scarf she knit me.

One problem. I forgot that I hate making bobbles. Am I the only knitter whose bobbles come out more like blumps? I cast on with my DPNs, hated it, frogged it, cast on again, knit past the bobbles and then realized that somehow I was knitting the hat inside out (sheesh), frogged it... And now three's the charm. I'm still not thrilled with my Blumples, but I'm liking how the rest of the hat is shaping up. Should finish in the next couple of days, I hope...

Hello everyone! My name is Hannah. I am a social work student in Boston and an avid (perhaps obsessive) knitter. I just discovered this KAL and thought it timely as I am about to embark on designing and publishing a book of winter accessory patterns. Here is my first charted pattern (that I wrote) and my first FO of 2007.
This one is my own pattern - Song in My Head. The picture is dark so you can't see the beautiful varigations in color, but it's the only picture I have on this computer right now. It is being blocked on a ballon - I need to order some head blockers I think....
As soon as I test knit the pattern once more, the pattern will be available for purchase.

Pattern: my own
Yarn: SWTC Karaoke - 1 skein of Ocean, 1 skein of Black Sheep
Needles: US size 7
Modifications: None since I wrote the pattern as I knit the hat :)

Sneaking In a Crocheted Beanie

Hi, everyone, I'm Birdsong and recently joined the KAL, after making several knitted hats in 2006, mainly for myself, one son, or a charity. I have the yarn set aside to knit myself a headband a la Calorimetry to wear snowboarding and hiking (I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where exercising in winter involves preparing for the cold first), and also a knitted beret before spring.

This is the first crocheted hat I have made in over a decade... talked into it by eldest son who says that crochet beanies are all the rage amongst snowboarders, and claims they are warmer (and this from the son who has gotten the most knitted hats from me from anyone except charities!). The yarn is Kathmandu Aran and is lovely and soft to work with... there is a thread hanging from the back just in case it doesn't fit him as well as it does me. The pattern is my usual even increase one that I have been using for crocheted hats since about 1974...double crochet until large enough, then a band of a few rows of single crochet for snugness, much like ribbing works in knitting.

Just finished a hat for DH -- had to try out the SWS soy-wool yarn, and he was the guineapig. Now I'm searching for just the right pattern for a hat for ME using hand-dyed yarn to match the beautiful scarf I got in ISE3. And lo and behold! I found the Hatalong!

I was worried that it might be closed and over, but Knitnana said otherwise and let me in.

Yay!

One of my New Years goals is to make a few more things for Afghans for Afghans, mostly hats and socks. I've already found lots of inspiration looking thru the archives here.

The two Moscow Magic Pink Peace Fleece Coronet versions were done in October, but because there were only two, I couldn't "count" them...at least not until...

Now. I just last night completed the second of these two Seaman's Caps for the DGS's - DGS1 get the navy one, and DGS2 gets the camel colored one. They should have been Christmas presents, but now will arrive in between the two boys' birthdays!

Almost the end of 2006 - and I FINALLY met my goal of at least ONE hat by my name in the sidebar! :)

I knit hats for charity - a *lot* of hats. In the last two months, our K4 (Krazy Kool Knitters & Krocheters) group at the local senior center sent 50 matched hat & scarf sets to a shelter for homeless veterans in Detroit. Over 40 sets for adult & children went to the local charity FISH where they were distributed in time for the holidays. I think my hat tally for the year is 132 {g}. Suffice it to say that knitting is something that I really really enjoy. I'll be scouting out more hat patterns to add to sidebar and hope they inspire everyone to pull out yarn & needles to try a new pattern or two.

I'd hate to be the only one posting on this blog...but maybe if I do it will inspire someone else to do the same? Or something.

More hats:

"Family" hats for my brother and his two little ones.
(SIL doesn't wear hats, I'm thinking of making her a Panta to compensate :).)
The pattern is a mish-mash of many, but basically a lightly ribbed brim and then plain knitting with a very slow decrease after about 3". The wee ones I cast on about 120 stitches, the really big one, 132. It's US 3 needles, Falk yarn from Dalegarn.

Hello! Long time no hat...but here is my first for the "season." I'm donating it to a couple who volunteer their time in Skid Row in Los Angeles. (Yes, the scarf is also part of my donation, but it's not a hat).
Knit on US 10.5s out of Jo-Ann Sensations "Angel Hair" color 242.
I used this pattern. I highly recommend it for an easy/quick hat pattern.

I found this pattern the other day and wondered if any of you have tried it. I would think it would wonderful as a chemo cap (made of very soft yarn) or as a Christmas gift of the person's favorite type of yarn. Has anyone made it? Thank you so much for the gracious welcome! I love this blog and and I love the idea of a KAL that is devoted to hats. I love making hats, which makes it a natural, and I am becoming involved with the chemo cap project, and for a last good point, with hats you never suffer from second sock syndrome!! LOL

As you know I have two teenagers at home. One is almost 16 and the other is almost 15. My almost 15 year old is a son with autism - he is fairly profoundly affected, is nonverbal and has a severe seizure disorder along with mild Tourette's and auditory processing disorder. I was, with my late husband (I lost him in 2002) the Autism Guide at About.com and also worked with McGraw Hill Higher Education. I guess you could say writing is my profession and knitting is my passion. So I write about autism, knitting, crocheting, and a handful of other topics.

I currently own a women's blogging network (who is looking for writers incidentally so if you are interested, drop me an email), am working on professional blogging and other book length manuscripts.

I'm sorry I haven't introduced myself after that wonderful welcome. I am getting over a rotten cold! I just have felt miserable so I have been lying about doing the Camille imitation (cough, cough) and feeling sorry for myself. *wink*

I only plan on a couple of changes for the near future.

1. I want to include crocheters as they are hat fanatics too and I think we can learn from each other.
2. I want to include a bond to Caps For A Cure because many of us are very committed to that project. (Thanks Mandy!!)
3. I want to end the hiatus.

So without further ado, let's start doing The Hat Trick (which I know now to be three hats and has something to do with soccer) and get those hats going!!

Playing in the sand

Is it cheating that I knit this during the hiatus? I hope not but feel to kill it if it is.

It's the Marloes Sand Hat in Rhumba. It's maroon twisted with blue/pink/red ribbon and a thin black thread. Toasty warm, fits when hair is down but stretches when it is pinned up, and makes an impact. The cables are great to knit and look good. I couldn't bare knitting earflaps though.

Three hats for The Ships Project

After wrestling with the Tychus cap pattern, on Knitty, I modified it to a shorter style that I could knit on size 10s without making it oversized. It came out perfectly by casting on 31 stitches, then making the short rows over 14. I was really happy with the results, especially using the gray and red Simply Soft.

The one in the middle is my "mistake" cap with a seed stitch cuff. All three are bound for The Ships Project.

So, it's three hats that make a hat trick, right? Fun!

I just finished this baby hat for a friend who is due in August. It matches a sweater I finished last week. I used Moda Dea Sassy Stripes in Crush. I am so proud to have earned my 5th hat trick! I had such a mental block about using DPN's and for the longest time had convinced myself that I couldn't. But finally I took the plunge and gave it a try.....and here I am 15 hats later, all made with DPN's!!

Hi everyone, long time no write, sorry. I did, however, FINALLY finish the LITTLE version of the ginormous (for a 3 yr old) hat that I'd lamented about last time. Here they are together as, um, yeah, they look exactly alike:
My 36 yr old housemate is the proud owner of the too-large one, and the lil' guy is off to Wisconsin with his blue and red brother. Yipee!!! If anyone is interested in making something similar, I've posted the pattern I used (my own) on my blog, here.

Cotton hats

This was my first attempt at just knitting hats without patterns. They're for a friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and will need extensive chemo. The pink one is a bit large (cast on 110) the green is a little better (cast on 95). They went really quick and I like the stripes. These were knitted with Cotton Tot's from the brim up.

I have had an amazing run of hats lately. Four since my first hat trick, to be exact. Let's see, there was the London Beanie for the hubby (which he loved, but LOST!!!), a recently completed hat for hubby's grandfather who is undergoing cancer treatment, a make up hat for hubby (Tychus), and a great baby hat finished this morning (modeled by the ever-patient Pooh). Fun, fun, fun! :)

My First Hat Trick

Long time no post. I've been waiting to save a very special hat for my first hat trick. I knit Shedir for my friend Tracy.

Shedir was knitted with Rowan Calmer in the color Joy on size 3, 16 inch circs and size 3 bamboo dps. I started the cast on during the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics for the Knitting Olympics. I finished on February 21, 2006. Shedir was a joy to knit.

While I'm posting I'll also share my recently completed Odessa, also knit with Rowan Calmer in the color Joy (I bought two balls for Shedir just in case and I'm glad I did.) and lilac glass, size 6 seed beads on size 4 and 6, 16 inch circs and size 6 dpns Started on February 26, 2006. Finished March 6, 2006. Odessa was my first experience knitting with beads.

I really enjoyed both patterns and loved knitting with the Calmer. Happy knitting everyone!

I made this hat for a friend who is Canadian and she is having a baby later on this spring. My baby is modeling it. I just did a simple baby hat pattern and used a cross stitch pattern for the maple leaf. I notice a lot of mistakes as far as switching yarn colors but she isn't a knitter so she won't know : )

Alterations: I got bored and only knit for four and a half inches before starting my decreases.

Opinion: Dull but fast. Love the yarn. Apparently it’s cute. Will not make a big version for my mother. Will not. Not at all. No. Knit it yourself. No.

Two for the price of one

I finished these hats and just remembered that I hadn't shown them to y'all!

Pattern: We Call Them Pirates from Hello Yarn.

Yarn: Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, just over 1/2 skein each color.

Needles: Clover Bamboo Sz 3 DPNs

Mods: I didn't knit a lining.

Thoughts: Love, love, love this pattern! It was my first time doing any stranded knitting. There are some wonky tension spots, but they're not really visible when it's on my head. The only thing I really don't like are the loose stitches where I went from one needle to the next. I do tighten my stitches when I knit on DPNs, but I didn't want to pull too tightly on this due to the stranding. I know it would look better if I had used a circ, but I didn't want to go buy one. I'll live with it.

The Husband has already requested one for himself, and yarn has been ordered.

Pattern: Belle Cloche from Knitting Pattern a Day Calendar 2005.

Yarn: Leftover Brook Farms Fourplay (leftover from my Clapotis).

Needles: Sz 7 Clover Bamboo circ and DPNs

Mods: I left out a few rows on the brim as I was afraid I'd run out of yarn.

Thoughts: The brim on the pattern hat seems to stick out more than it does on my, but that could be resolved by blocking. I really like the pattern - it's a nice alternative to a snug cap. I love love love this yarn. I was in torment about trying this for this pattern, as the pattern calls for 100g of worsted weight yarn, and I had 69g left over. But I thought I'd try it, and the worst thing I'd have to do was frog. Amazingly enough, I still have some left over! I think this is a nice "spring" hat - however, I'm sure that it will never be in the cool range this spring to wear!

Here's my latest hat. It's from the book "Hats – a Knitter's Dozen". I used Cascade 220 yarn. It's a great pattern and this yarn is really nice for felting.

Simple Baby Hat

Here's my second Hat-Trick - a quick baby hat. My husband's cousin gave birth to a baby boy, so I'm sending them this:
It's cotton (which I'm not a fan of as I don't like knitting with it - not terribly flexible) and incredibly simple. I used size 7 needles.

CO 30 stitches.
Purl row
Knit row

*Knit row
Purl row
Knit row*

and keep on doing that (*) until you have 30 ridges. Sew the sides together. Sew the top and pull together to make it pucker (I guess you can call this gathering). Flip the brim up to fit child's head.

This is a pattern I got from Marilyn who has been knitting for 75 years. Quick, easy, cute. Fits a standard newborn and allows it to grow with the kiddo.

Dude, Where's My Hat?

Hey, Everybody! I thought I'd finally share something here. This hat was made for a friend before she moved back to North Carolina in January. I'm sure she's getting more use out of it there than here in San Diego. The pattern is Dude, Where's my hat? from the newest Yarn Girls' book. I used Noro Silk Garden #47.

I plan on finishing many more hats as soon as the Olympics are over. Hope to see you at my place sometime soon.

SnB Devil Hat

I'm a new knitter and this was my first non-square FO. I knitted the Devil Hat from Debbie Stoller's Stitch n Bitch book. I started knitting it the way the pattern called for (from the brim up) but I just couldn't get into the zen of knitting it - I must have frogged the darn thing at least 10 times. Hey, it was my first time using circulars and my first time doing the seed stitch. A neighbor of mine, who is a knitting goddess - she spins her own yarn, showed me how I can knit from the top down. So I reversed the pattern and finished the hat up. I really like how it turned out. By knitting from the top down, I ended up increasing instead of decreasing. I like the way the M1 increases look as opposed to the ssk and k2tog decreases. The other thing that knitting from the top down allowed is the ability to knit continuously - I didn't have to sew the flaps on separately. The only thing I would change would be to use a different BO as the one I used made the brim very tight.

Mary from Tactless Wonder here, hi. I joined a little bit ago but haven't had the time to say a peep. Peep.

I did not cast this little guy on until after I joined, promise, and I just finished him a couple days ago, but picture taking is hard in winter with my "fisherprice" camera. Happily the sun finally came out long enough for me to document:

Green on Green Cascade 220 in colors 9435 & 9413
Needles: 7 & 8 Circs
Pattern: Weeeelll, kinda the "needle-felted hat" from knit hats! But you can tell I striped it and didn't do the felting, or the i-cord....I'm trying to make a brother of a previously made hat...but failed. It's just too big, so um, when you see a similar picture in a couple weeks, maybe that'll be the "success story." Here, I'll post a pic of both hats so you can see what I wanted to make:
You can kinda see the size difference there, yes?

And now a question: You've mentioned before that Pantas count, well, I was on section one of my panta (and I'm not in the Panta KAL) when I joined. Can I count that here or does it not qualify since I was already cast on before I joined?

Oh yes, I'm on another hat roll ;) Just can't stop making the things. This is another of my own designs, made from Debbie Bliss Maya on 5mm needles - took the whole skein!

Both of the Jester hats are variations of the same pattern that I've written, that can be found here

Also here is a simple Beanie, ribbed rim, stocking stitch body with a dinky I-cord to finish. Knitted on 5mm needles, yarn is a wool boucle from handpaintedyarns.com.

Just a quick question - are crochet hats allowed or are we strictly knitting here?

My First Hat Trick

I have now completed 4 hats since starting this KAL.

Here is one:

Made with: SIRDAR DENIM ULTRA (Mega chunky with cotton and wool)

Pattern: Gusto 10 Beanie

Made with: No Boundaries (WAL-MART brand) 100% Polyamide

Pattern Used: Rolled Brim hat pattern

And lastly:

This is a picture of a hat that I made before bc I haven't taken a picture of the one I recently made, but it's the same hat, same color and everything.

Made With: Thick and Quick Wool-ease

Pattern: a leaflet pattern I got in a store, but the pattern is on LionBrand also.

So there is my hat trick hats plus one.

And probably the last one. I am done with hats this winter. I love knitting them but I want the winter be gone, so no more hats :)

The bordo stripes one is reknitted for a friend Jana, the blue one is mine (yarn Lana Grossa ). The third one again for Jana and the last one for another friend Eva. So all my friend´s heads are warm :)

My first Hat-Trick!

The first hat I've made from my own hand-spun. The yarn started life as 100g of hand-dyed Gotland curls (a pig to card yet incredibly long fibres so easy to spin) and ended up as this. There's a fair bit of yarn left, despite it being big enough to go over my dreads. And there's no pattern, just made it up as I went along.

I love it and it's so warm!

But I'm still waiting on the yarn for my Olympic knitting, so I grabbed the ball of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky I bought out of the half-off bin at a LYS, and, after refusing to use two different patterns, cast on for myself, with my own maths as help, a simple 2x2 ribbed hat.

And after two episodes of 24 and Lost, I cast off. I love it.

Pattern: Cast on 60 stitches, knit in 2x2 ribbbing until close to top of head. (about 8 inches from the bottom of the hat) Decrease round: K2tog, p2 around. K1 p2tog around. Knit 2 rounds in 1x1 ribbing. K2tog around. K2tog around. Draw yarn through remaining stitches and cinch up.
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky color 16009
Needles: Clover Bamboo US 10.5 DPNs
Dates: Wednesday February 8
Thoughts: Seems to be a bit pilly, but so freaking soft! And just the right amount of snugness. I'm not sure where the pointy bit on top came from, but that's OK.
Finished just in time for it to get "cold" here - about 50. Brrrr. Not.

I finished my Panta just now. Kaity's was so cute, I just had to make one too. Noey has decided it's hers. I originally thought I might be able to get it done for my mom before she left on her trip.....no such luck....she left this morning. It's made from an unknown synthetic yarn I found in my stash. I want to make another one out of a variegated yarn.
